What else did I choose to do that day? Oh, the air feels nice today, let's go canoeing!
HotSauce has taken each of the boys separately since we brought our canoe down to the river a week ago, but I hadn't had a chance to go yet. Instead of just paddling around near our dock and City Island, HotSauce thought we should drive the canoe upstream and coast. So we put in on the bank in the northern part of West Fairview, and headed straight into some whitewater. Now we could see that little stretch of whitewater and were prepared for it, but what I didn't realize when I had this bright idea was that it was a v e r y . w i n d y . day! No kidding, the wind was about 20 mph, with gusts up to 33 mph! It was mostly blowing upstream, which meant that to "coast" downstream would have taken all day, so we did our share of paddling. and balancing. Fortunately we have been canoeing this river for 7 years so we know how to keep our canoe balanced, even when the children move around, or reach over the edge to touch the water.

And we can handle waves, too. Have you ever encountered waves while in a canoe? The river had one-two foot high waves on it most of the two hours or so we were out on it. Seriously, the waves were cresting all over the river! (The pics on this post are not from Mother's Day!) Fuzzy Wuzzy was sitting in the bottom of the canoe, between Squiggly Wiggly (middle seat) and HotSauce (front seat). All this rocking and hardly being able to see where we were going, he complained quite a bit. So HotSauce pulled him up front where he could see, and he was loving it. Until those one foot waves turned into two foot waves. Then he was just very wet and not too happy!
We put in and explored one of the random islands north of the Harvey Taylor bridge, and then headed over to City Island for some play time before coming home to quick supper, baths and some yummy hot chocolate.
Yep, it was a fun day with my boys! How was your Mother's Day?

Wow! It sounds like y'all had a great day. You are much more adventureous than I am.
Your day sounds like fun and hopefully relaxing too!
We had a great day - baby dedication and all the family over for a meal afterwards! :)I prepped the food on Sat, so I did not have a lot of work to do. It was nice to have the family over again!
How fun! Other than the hubby going to church for children's worship, we made dinner and hung out here at home together. It was very nice, and they got me a new book to read!
