I am dumbfounded. My Squiggly-Wiggly is not a picky eater, in that he likes lots of things. This includes many things that we eat that most kids would not touch. I believe that's mostly because he grew up seeing us eat it and having tastes from the time he was a baby. There are certain foods Squiggly-Wiggly has never liked. We actually don't serve them to him much because there is so much that he does like.
One of the things he has never liked is deli meat. I don't buy it much ever since being pregnant and finding out all the bad stuff that's in it. But every so often I splurge on some Boars Head, which is really expensive but doesn't have any of the bad stuff. I splurged and got some a couple of days ago, mostly as a lunch change for HotSauce. He likes to have 3 meats together, Ham, Turkey and Roast Beef.
Today I made peanut butter sandwiches for my boys, and I made myself a Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato sandwich with mayo and mustard. I almost fell on the floor when Squiggly-Wiggly asked me if he could have a bite of my sandwich. He had already finished his sandwich and apples, so I cut my sandwich in half and let him have a bite. Well, he took a bite, then another and a third. I asked him if he'd like me to make that kind of sandwich for his lunch to take to school. He smiled and said yes. (He usually takes PBJ, which is his favorite.)
Fuzzy-Wuzzy wanted some too, so I took the sandwich back and cut off a bite for Fuzzy-Wuzzy, a portion for myself, and gave Squiggly-Wiggly a small piece (worth about 2-3 more bites). Then Squiggly-Wiggly asked me to make him a sandwich like that today, so I made him a half-sandwich and he ate that too.
So, if your kids won't eat something, just eat it in front of them while serving them their same old lunch, and maybe someday they'll ask to taste your food and like it. I'm still amazed, because it's pretty rare that Squiggly-Wiggly will change his preference for a food. He has been somewhat willing to try new foods, but not to suddenly like a food he's disliked. The thing that was bothering him the most was that the sandwich had mayo on it, which he thinks he doesn't like. I pointed out that he does like it on this type of sandwich. He agreed.

How funny! Just when you think you have them figured out, they change right in front of you. That's great that he tried something new - and liked it!
Fire really isn't into fresh fruit, but years ago I found that it eat fruit in a slushy. Basically, frozen strawberries, vanilla yogurt and really ripe bananas. He thinks of it as a milkshake instead of fruit...it's all in the perception of a thing, I guess.
